Some data are not readily available for Somalia, and most available statistics – on undernourishment and child malnutirion, especially – date from 1990, before the East African nation’s socialist authoritarian government collapsed in 1991. Somalia has has been without internationally recognized leadership and has faced political turmoil since that time. Although the country imports US$518 million worth of agricultural goods annually, the average Somali only takes in 1 762 calories per day (among the lowest in Africa, but still higher than nearby Eritrea). Animal health programmes such as desert locust and rinderpest eradication activities receive active support.
