"While Mozambique is not entirely food secure, the country has demonstrated significant, positive growth. After 500 years of colonial rule by Portugal, followed by economic dependence on South Africa and a bloody civil war, a 1992 UN-negotiated peace agreement allowed Mozambique to concentrate on positive reform, in particular to the agricultural sector. But there is room for much-needed improvement. Fifty-two percent of its 23 million population suffer from under nourishment. AIDS is a factor in keeping life expectancy at a low 48 years of age. Child mortality is high at 142 per thousand live births. Despite this, agriculture is one of the nation’s strengths and constitutes 21 percent of Mozambique’s gross domestic product."
