The South Africa 1993 Integrated Household Survey is supported by the Living Standards Measurement Study (LSMS) project undertaken by the Development Research Group at the World Bank. The LSMS project explores ways of improving the type and quality of household data collected by statistical offices in developing countries. Its goal is to foster increased use of household data as a basis for policy decisionmaking. Specifically, the LSMS is working to develop new methods to monitor progress in raising levels of living, to identify the consequences for households of past and proposed government policies, and to improve communications between survey statisticians, analysts, and policy makers.

The principal purpose of this survey was to collect hard statistical information about the conditions under which South Africans live in order to provide policy makers with the data required for planning strategies to implement such goals as those outlined in the Government of National Unity's Reconstruction and Development 
Programme. Two instruments were used in the survey: a comprehensive household questionnaire (11 sections) and a community questionnaire (7 sections). Data collection was carried out in 1993 by the survey organizations, which included the Bureau of Market REsearch, Data Research Africa, Human Sciences Research Coucil, Mark Data, and Social Surveys. The survey covered approcimately 9000 households. The sample design adopted for the study was a two-stage self-weighting design in which the first stage units were Census Enumerator Subdistricts (ESDs, or their equivalent) and the second stage were households.
