The Tanzania 2008-2009 National Panel Survey (TZNPS) is supported by the Living Standards Measurement Study - Integrated Surveys on Agriculture (LSMS-ISA) project undertaken by the Development Research Group at the World Bank. The LSMS-ISA project aims to support governments in seven Sub-Saharan African countries to generate nationally representative, household panel data with a strong focus on agriculture and rural development. The surveys under the LSMS-ISA project are modeled on the multi-topic integrated household survey design of the LSMS; Household, Agriculture, and Community questionnaires are each an integral part of every survey effort. For some of the surveys that have been done over the years, panel data sets that merge the multiple years of data have been created.

TZNPS is the first in a series of nationally representative household panel surveys that assembles information on a wide range of topics including agricultural production, non-farm income generating activities, consumption expenditures, and a wealth of other socio-economic characteristics. It was implemented by the Tanzania National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). There were 24, 14, and 11 sections in the household questionnaire, agriculture questionnaire, and community questionnaire, respectively. Data were collected between October 2008 and October 2009. The sample size of 3,280 households (2,064 households in rural areas and 1,216 in urban areas) was calculated to be sufficient to produce national estimates of poverty, agricultural production and other key indicators. It would also be possible in the final analysis to produce disaggregated poverty rates for 4 different strata: Dar es Salaam, other urban areas on mainland Tanzania, rural mainland Tanzania, and Zanzibar. Alternatively, estimates of most key indicators can be produced at each zone level of total 7 zones on the mainland (North, Central, Eastern, South, Southern Highlands, West and Lake).
