Call for proposals - Economics and Governance of Global Value Chains in Africa - due November 7, 2021

The Research Network Sustainable Global Supply Chains in collaboration with the Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik / German Development Institute (DIE) has a call on Research Proposals focusing on the “Economics and Governance of Global Value Chains in Africa”.

Anecdotal evidence indicates that Africa as a whole is heavily engaged in global value chains (GVC), generally as high as those of their counterparts in other developing countries in South Asia, East Asia, and Latin America, although cross-country heterogeneity abounds. Despite this, research on the gains and banes of GVC through the lens of a developing country has largely focused on countries in Latin America or South and East Asian countries. In fact, our understanding of GVC in Africa is limited. More still, the number of academic contributions on GVC research from African scholars has also been limited.

Motivated by this, the Research Network Sustainable Global Supply Chains in collaboration with the Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik / German Development Institute (DIE) invites research proposals on the “Economics and Governance of Global Value Chains in Africa”. Whiles the call is open, researchers of African descent are particularly encouraged to submit their research proposals. The proposals should be limited to five pages, excluding the cover page and references. Please submit your proposals as pdf by email to Gideon Ndubuisi via Gideon.Ndubuisi@die-gdi.de cc’ing Solomon.Owusu@die-gdi.de stating “Submission” in the subject line by November 7, 2021. In addition, submit the CVs of up to two authors. Any submission and research proposal-related queries and inquiries should be directed to Gideon.Ndubuisi@die-gdi.de, stating ‘Query’ in the subject line. More detailed information about the call can be found here.

Proposals from (groups of) individuals as well as non-profit organizations are welcome. Suitable papers will be awarded up to 7, 000 Euros. Expected deliverables include a working paper and a one-page summary of the main findings at the end of May 2022. The working paper needs to be written in English and will be considered for publication in the DIE Discussion Paper series. The funds are expected to cover all expenses of the proposed research (including data collection or research assistance).
