2012 Training Course - GAMS-based Computable General Equilibrium Modeling (Basic)

The training on building multi-sector computable general equilibrium (CGE) models was conducted by Veronique Robichaud, a senior resource person at the Partnership for Economic Policy (PEP). The objective of the training was to develop the participants’ expertise in understanding and building multi-sector computable general equilibrium (CGE) models used to analyze the microeconomic impact of macroeconomic shocks and policies on a national economy.

2012 Training Course - Poverty Measurement and Analysis

The objective of this training course was to introduce participants to the tools and methods for the analysis of poverty using household survey data. Particular emphasis was given to poverty dynamics and intertemporal aspects of poverty measurement and modeling. Hands-on applications using the Stata software were conducted to facilitate later use of the tools presented in the course. References were provided to participants, drawing on seminal and recent works on poverty measurement and analysis.

AGRODEP will offer eight (8) training courses for its members in 2012. These courses are the most preferred by AGRODEP members out of eighteen (18) that were proposed to them in a survey conducted in September 2011. The courses include training on data (SAMs, household surveys), CGE modeling, poverty analysis, impact evaluation, and panel data econometrics.

Course Description

Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) models are widely used to analyze the impact of shocks and policies. They are operationalized through the calibration procedure which consists in finding models’ parameters that permit to reproduce the benchmark situation given by the Social Accounting Matrix (SAM).

2012 Grants for Research Valorization

AGRODEP continues to accept applications for its 2012 grants for research valorization. These grants are available to AGRODEP members and provide financial assistance for members to present research at international conferences and pay publications submission fees.  Grants may also be awarded for members to attend trainings outside of AGRODEP in certain cases. All proposals for financial assistance for research valorization will be approved on a case-by-case basis, and research must be clearly linked to AGRODEP activities.

Announcement on AGRODEP Grants for Innovative Research

AGRODEP recently granted conditional approval to fourteen grant proposals submitted by AGRODEP members in response to the competitive call for proposals for innovative research launched in June of 2011 (see the AGRODEP Grant Program for more details). 

Launching AGRODEP Working Paper Series

The AGRODEP Modeling Consortium is launching its Working Paper Series, a bilingual (English and French) online publication that aims at enhancing the visibility of African researchers and experts as well as contributing to the policy dialogue on African Growth and Development. Manuscripts are accepted only from AGRODEP members and the focus of the analysis must be on economic growth, poverty reduction, and development policy in Africa. There are no pre-conditions on the manuscript length and presentation.

2011 Innovative Research Grant

We are launching a competitive call for proposals for innovative research. Proposals for this type of grant will only be accepted from AGRODEP members. AGRODEP members will be given until August 31st, 2011 to draft a proposal that presents the research topic, its scientific and policy relevance for Africa, the methodology to be used, and its justification.

The 2011 AGRODEP meetings and workshop were held on June 6-8, 2011 at the Novotel Hotel in Dakar, Senegal. In this three-day workshop,

AGRODEP members gave brief presentations on their research. In addition, the workshop included sessions by leading researchers focusing on three current and emerging research topics: Climate Change, Food Prices and Price Volatility, and Foreign Direct Investment in Land.

2010 Inception Workshop

AGRODEP Inception Workshop was held on October 28-29, 2010 at the Meridien President Hotel in Dakar, Senegal. The main objective of the workshop was to introduce the AGRODEP initiative, its goals, and its future role and activities. The workshop gathered experts in the field of economics from leading institutions around the world as well as new AGRODEP members from various countries in Africa.
