2013 Training Course - Applied Microeconometrics

This course will provide participants an extensive range of up-to-date statistical and econometric techniques to analyze microeconomic data. In particular, a wide variety of microeconometric methods available in Stata will be covered, including linear regression, instrumental-variables estimation, nonlinear models for binary, multinomial, and censored models, estimation of average treatment effects, simulation and bootstrapping, and duration analysis. Special emphasis will be placed on the rationale of the models, the implementation of the methods and the interpretation of the results using multiple examples. Overall, the course aims to help participants analyze microeconomic data by applying different econometric techniques using a popular specialized software.

2013 Training Course - Applied Panel Data Econometrics

The wide availability of panel data presents unique opportunities for researchers. It is essential to understand the intuition and implications of the estimators and tests that are currently available to successfully take advantage of panel data. This course will focus on core panel data techniques, building a strong foundation before moving into more cutting edge methods that have been recently developed. The class will also discuss in detail implementation of panel data estimators and tests using the popular open source software R. The class will take place over five days to ensure maximum coverage of the core topics.

2013 Gaps in Research Grant

The African Growth and Development Policy (AGRODEP) Modeling Consortium is issuing its second annual call for competitive grant proposals to support research on emerging issues in Africa that have previously received little or no attention.   

The selected topic of this year’s GAPS IN RESEARCH grant is “Barriers to the expansion of agriculture and agroindustry in Africa”. 

2013 Training Course - Evaluation of Public Policies

The aim of the course is to introduce participants to recent methodological developments in the evaluation of public policies. These developments have shown that it is possible to circumvent most conceptual problems related to the evaluation of public policies under relatively innocuous assumptions. The importance of these developments has been underlined by the award of the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2000 to James Heckman and Daniel McFadden, the two main contributors to the field.

Course description

The impact of high food prices on households’ welfare can be quite large especially on developing countries where many households devote an important share of their budgets on food expenditures. Poverty rates can also be significantly affected and the amount of fiscal resources needed to run safety net programs to compensate negatively affected households might be important.

In fact, under the leadership of leading academic institutions in the US and Europe, empirical studies based on robust comparisons of treatment and control groups have received considerable financial support from the donor community and led to dozens of publications in leading academic journals in the areas of agriculture, education and health..

The AGRODEP team would like to take this opportunity to launch the AGRODEP 2012 Special Award. This award is open to AGRODEP members as a reward for excellent publications in 2012 and as an incentive for further publications in the coming year.

2013 Grants for Research Valorization

AGRODEP continues to accept applications for its 2013 Grants for Research Valorization. These grants are available to all AGRODEP members and provide financial assistance for members to present research at international conferences and pay publication submission fees. Grants may also be awarded for members to attend trainings outside of AGRODEP in certain cases. All proposals for financial assistance for research valorization will be approved on a case-by-case basis, and research must be clearly linked to AGRODEP activities.

The AGRODEP team is pleased to announce its list of training courses for 2013. The courses were selected through a member survey conducted in November 2012; in this survey, members were given a list of proposed courses and asked to select their top three based on which would be most useful for their research and professional development. A total of 76 members participated in the survey and selected eight courses.
