2016 Training Course - Tools for Value Chain Analysis

Overview

AGRODEP, with support from the CGIAR Research Program on Policies, Institutions, and Markets (PIM), is pleased to announce a new two-part training course on Tools for Value Chain Analysis as part of the AGRODEP Value Chain Analysis Virtual Hub. 
 
The first part of the course, the Women's Empowerment in Agriculture Index (WEAI), will be taught by Hazel Malapit and the second part of the course, Introduction to the Participatory Market Chain Approach (PMCA), will be taught by Sarah Mayanja. More information about these tools and the training course are provided below. Participants are expected to attend both parts of the course.
 

2016 AGRODEP Impact Evaluation Network Workshop

AGRODEP will hold a workshop on impact evaluation on March 7-8, 2016 with some members of the AGRODEP Impact Evaluation Network (AIEN) and impact evaluation practitioners in IFPRI and other Washington, DC-based organizations. Launched in 2012, the AIEN provides selected AGRODEP researchers with the latest technical and topical developments in the field of impact evaluation, with the goal of creating a robust network of highly trained impact evaluation practitioners in Africa. AIEN members will present their papers or proposals for constructive feedback, mutual learning, and potential mentorship or collaboration.

2015 Training Course - Applied Microeconometrics

Overview

This course will provide participants an extensive range of up-to-date statistical and econometric techniques to analyze microeconomic data. In particular, a wide variety of microeconometric methods available in Stata will be covered, including linear regression, instrumental-variables estimation, nonlinear models for binary, multinomial, and censored models, estimation of average treatment effects, simulation and bootstrapping, and duration analysis.

Overview

The aim of the course is to introduce participants to recent methodological developments in the evaluation of public policies. These developments have shown that it is possible to circumvent most conceptual problems related to the evaluation of public policies under relatively innocuous assumptions. The importance of these developments has been underlined by the award of the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2000 to James Heckman and Daniel McFadden, the two main contributors to the field.

Over time, the gravity model has been defined as the workhorse of international trade and its ability to correctly approximate bilateral trade flows makes it one of the most successful “empirical fact” in economics. With data increasingly available for developing, as well as developed countries, the gravity model has come to be the starting point for a wide variety of research questions with a policy component.

Overview

The wide availability of panel data presents unique opportunities for researchers. It is essential to understand the intuition and implications of the estimators and tests that are currently available to successfully take advantage of panel data. This course will focus on core panel data techniques, building a strong foundation before moving into more cutting edge methods that have been recently developed. The class will also discuss in detail implementation of panel data estimators and tests using the popular open source software R. The class will take place over five days to ensure maximum coverage of the core topics.
